Sen de mi Romulus

Romulus, My Father; kadın kahramanın ağır görme bozukluğu yaşadığı filmdir. Romulus kod adlı Eric Bana'yı ardında bırakıp gidebilen kadının, göz doktorlarının duvarındaki ışıklı harf listesini baştan aşağı yanlış okumuş kadından hiçbir farkı yoktur.


Sokrates'e atfedilen; "Evlenin, eşiniz iyiyse mutlu, kötüyse filozof olursunuz." sözünün 'Anneniz sapık, babanız akıl hastası olursa merak etmeyin, filozof olursunuz." kabilinde vücut bulmuş bir gerçek hayat versiyonunu konu edinmiş Romulus, My Father. Açılış sahnesi, kullanılan mekanlar, bağlar, bahçeler, yer yer müzikler ve özellikle Raimond karakterini canlandıran Kodi Smit-McPhee ile Hora karakterini canlandıran Marton Csokas'nın harikulade oyunculukları filmi kurtarmaya yetmemiş. Biraz daha az gerçeği tolere edebilir ancak daha hafif bir hikayeye hiç de hayır demezdim.


Filmden bana kalan; baba, oğul ve Hora'nın yumurtalarla uğraştığı sahneyle ilgili.. Günümüz çocukları babalarıyla keyifli vakit geçirme fırsatını nasıl da kaçırıyorlar. Eski nesiller evlerinin yakınlarında çalışan babalarının yanında olabilme, işleri babalarını seyrederek öğrenebilme ve toplum içersindeki rol kimliklerine uygun davranış paternini edinirken özdeşleştikleri ebeveynlerini birinci elden gözlemleme şansına sahiptiler. Şimdilerin babaları ise iş/yol yorgunu olarak, muhtemelen geç bir saatte ve artık çocuklarına harcayacak pek az takati kalmış olarak dönüyorlar evlerine. Gerçi, şimdilerin anneleri de pek yorgun. Çocuklar pek bir iki arada, bir derede...

Romulus, My Father

Before I write anything about this particular movie, I'd like to describe the way vyaka and I watch&review these movies. We have compiled (and still continue to do) a list of movies which neither of us have seen but both are interested; then decide on a movie to watch (we take turns for the choice), then get a hold of a copy and arrange a date for the movie session.. The important point to note is we watch them seperately in our homes (busy lives and all :p); but start watching at the same time.. then after finishing it we call each other and talk about it. And that's what we did last night..

Unfortunately, this time I had actually more fun exchanging text messages with vyaka throughout the movie than watching it.. Well, Eric Bana and the child actor Kodi Smit-McPhee kinda made it watchable but still.. If we hadn't committed, if I'd started watching it on TV by myself for example, I don't think I would have finished this movie.. I kept talking (more like shouting) at the screen, trying to make sense of the characters' (read Christina's) behaviour.. The irony is, the movie is based on a biographical memoir (of Australian philosopher Raimond Gaita); so the events in the movie actually took place.. So knowing that fact, and still not being able to care for the story, got me really frustrated!

The cinematography, the background music (at times, sounded like traditional Anatolian tunes), the performances were all adequate.. but that's it.. The story wasn't engaging; I had sympathy for Romulus, and especially for Raimond, but not enough to be curious about what happens to them next.. Throughout the movie the feeling I had (I know I am repeating myself but this needs to be said) was frustration..

So my rating will be more for the production value, rather than entertainment value..

Gets a 5/10 from me..

Untamed Heart

He doesn't make sense.

She doesn't make sense.

Together they make sense.

Yes, above statement just about sums up the relationship of the lead characters..

Caroline works as a waitress in a diner; she's had no luck with love but stil pursues it. She is sociable and kind; but has problems finishing things which she starts.. Adam, on the other hand, works as a busy boy in the same diner. He is shy and doesn't talk to people. One day, on the way home, Caroline's attacked by two men and rescued by Adam. As a result, they start interacting more and it's not long before they begin a relationship. What happens next is, for you to watch..

Marisa Tomei and Christian Slater make a great pair; you just cannot help but care for their story. The soundtrack is very good; I had to rewind and watch some scenes just to listen to the song in the background.

Overall, a VERY good movie which I'd like to rewatch some other time..

Gets an 8/10 from me..

I wasn't Finished

O'nu kısacık bir süre için bile olsa bulmayı ve varlığınızı temelinden sarsışını seyreylemeyi mi tercih ederdiniz yoksa böyle bir kaybı yaşamamak için hayatın O'nunla nasıl bir hal alacağını hiç bilmemeyi mi? Untamed Heart'ın sorusuna cevap vermek güç. Hancock'un Mary'si, I didn't think you'd miss what you didn't remember diyordu. Acaba insan bilmediği şeyleri özlemez mi? Yoksa neye olduğunu bilmeden özlem çektiği de olur mu insanın? Aslında yok dediğimiz varla müstakil olduğuna göre, önceden var olanın ortadan kalkışıdır yok. Varlığı tatmamış olan yoklara hiç diyoruz. İnsan hiç'i özler mi?



Untamed Heart adından tam da belli olduğu ama benim izlemeden hiç de anlayamadığım gibi, insan içine karışamamışlığın hikayesi aslında. Arayıştan değil, artık aramayıştan bahsediyor çokça... Kendi hallerinde ve oldukları kadar olmayı kabul eden iki insanın birbirlerine, razı olduklarından fazlası olabileceklerini öğrettikleri bir güzel hikaye...


Adam'ın alışık olmadığımız bir öyküsü ve alışık olmadığımız bir davranış biçimi var. Fark ettiğiniz anda ya arkanıza bakmadan kaçmanıza ya da dizlerinizin üzerine yığılmanıza sebep olacak ayrıntılar biriktiriyor. Caroline'ın uydusuymuş gibi bakıyor, yaşıyor, düşünüyor. Yörüngesini anakarayı rahatsız etmeyecek bir mesafede çizen ve tavafını aksatmadan sürdüren bir uydu gibi...

Adam: I follow you home...
Caroline: You follow me home?
Adam: I wasn't finished.
Caroline: Finish.
Adam: I follow you home to make sure you're... safe.
Caroline: Well I never see you.
Adam: I stay pretty far behind. I'm sorry...
Caroline: Well, I mean, don't be sorry. I just...
Adam: I wasn't finished.
Caroline: Finish.
Adam: I am sorry I was late that night.

Caroline, yok yorgunu... Aramaktan ve bulamamaktan, istediği gibi olmadığını bildiği halde bulduğu kadarını dahi elinde tutamamaktan yorgun.

Caroline: My dad, first guy to walk out of my life, definetly not the last. Funny things, you and me. You always stayin' away from love, me always chasin' after it.

Adam, Caroline'ın bilmediği bir dünya...

Adam: Do you like music, Caroline?
Caroline: Hı-Hımm....that's the first time I heard you say my name. It sounded... nice.
Adam: Would you like to listen to my records Caroline? ...Caroline.

Caroline, Adam'ın dokunulmamaşlığında bir usul soluk...

Caroline: I am going to fall in love with you. You don't have to love me back. I am going to give you my heart.

Adam: [Touching his chest] Then how come I hurt here when you're not with me?

Adam: I wonder if you think about me half as much as I think about you.

Caroline: I have fallen...
Adam: Are you hurt?
Caroline: I wasn't finished.
Adam: Finish.
Caroline: I have fallen so in love with you, so much more than I said I would.

Caroline: He was like an angel, you know? I never knew life could be like that. He was the one thing I followed through in my life, the one thing I didn't give up on. I was good at loving him.

Kendimi mamisaphe'nin şefkatli sinema bilgisine teslim ettiğim filmdir bu ayrıca. '2000 öncesi filmleri almayalım listemize' bıdıbıdısıyla devam ederken ben, çaktırmadan öyle bir kroşe indirmiştir ki, elleri dert görmesin, ne zaman 2000 öncesi filmleri de listemize almasını kabul ettim, ne zaman 'yok mîrim, eski filmlerdeki tat kalmadı' der oldum, ne zaman listemizin o 'tat'lı filmlerden yeterince nasibi almamışlığından yakınmaya başladım, bilemiyorum. Şunu söyleyebilirim; çok çabuk oldu, hiç acımadı.

Step Up

Starting from 70's, Hollywood studios produced some really succesful dance movies; Saturday Night Fever, Dirty Dancing, Flashdance, Footloose, Save the Last Dance, Billy Elliot to name a few.. And now, Step Up is one of the latest to join among them.

The story has Tyler Gage breaking into an Arts School and damaging the props in its theatre.. He is caught in the act and sentenced to 200 hours community service which he has to serve at the same school. He catches the attention of one of the students there, Nora, who is preparing for her senior showcase.. After some mutual hesitation/apprehension they start rehearsing together.. You can guess the rest.. ;)

Though the story is predictable, the movie is quite entertaining; Channing Tatum (Tyler) and Jenna Dewan (Nora) are great dancers and very enjoyable to watch.. As the movie had considerable success, the sequel was released in 2008 which was also a success..

Gets a 7/10 from me..
